I DJ NOW spoke to DJ FX about his unique sound, future goals, connection to I DJ NOW, and more!

I DJ NOW: How did your diverse background growing up in NYC and being born in Ecuador influence your musical journey and unique style as a DJ?

DJ FX: I believe my upbringing shaped my foundations. Growing up my family listened to Hot97 and LaMega, making my creative taste quite mixed from a young age. Influencing my initial roots with Hip Hop, R&B, Merengue & Bachata.

IDJ: Can you tell us about the process of blending cultures and genres in your performances? How do you ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for your audience?

FX: Being raised in NY the unity of so many backgrounds under a single roof really makes it quite simple, in my opinion, to blend many genres and allow for a all around inclusive experience for the crowd. I believe your music knowledge is what really comes into play, the more you know, the better you can unite them. Recently I’ve been on a tech house wave where I’ve wanted to incorporate it into my sets but keep the masses intrigued and feel connected to it; even if they’ve never heard the track, so I’ll blend it with a familiar song that they can sing along to, before diving into an ONLY Tech House track. Hooking them is always the first task.

IDJ: What are some of the challenges you've faced while merging different music styles, and how have you overcome them?

FX: When something is “new” is when people clash and could be a little hesitant to accept and enjoy what they’re listening to. As a performer I like to carry them along the experience with a little communication. Getting on the mic and letting them know what's to come goes a long way.

IDJ: Your music has gained international appeal, what do you think is the key element that makes your sound resonate with such a diverse audience?

FX: Connection is key, keeping your fan base entertained thru a variety of mixes on SoundCloud, social media engagement and content along with proper branding goes a long way.

IDJ: How do you approach creating your mixes and mixtapes? What inspires you during the creative process?

FX: When the creative juices are flowing I like to go with the flow, sometimes a mood or a specific sound will influence the track curation that will ultimately become a mix or mixtape.

IDJ: As an artist constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds, what are your future goals and ambitions in the world of music?

FX: Ultimately to FINALLY sit my butt down and create an EP of original material.

IDJ: What advice would you give to aspiring DJs or artists who are looking to create their own unique style and make an impact in the industry?

FX: Always follow your gut, always learn to do better than you did yesterday. Do your best not to compare yourself to the next person. And always invest in yourself.

IDJ: How did you get started in the music industry, and what initially drew you in?

FX: I’ve always liked music more than the average person, always. One day as a preteen I saw my first set of Technics at a DJ Pop up Store (Abrakadabra, the old iDjNow) at the Bay Shore Mall and I suddenly knew what I wanted to do forever. That kickstarted my passion, turned hobby, turned career.

IDJ: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and in what ways have they shaped your approach to mashup production?

FX: Sounds more than who, influence my creations. I love Afro-drums, tribal, tech etc. Songs that might be “too slow” for my performance taste, I can go ahead and give it a facelift to keep up with the energy of my set.

IDJ: How do you prep for an upcoming gig?

FX: I try to always stay hydrated, take my supplements and get as much rest as I can. A fresh mind is key to avoiding fatigue and burnouts.

IDJ: Do you have any rituals/things you do before an event?

FX: It used to be a cup of coffee but recently I’ve been eating a banana before my sets, it really does give you energy. I’ve noticed even my longer sets go by quicker.

IDJ: What can your fans anticipate from you in the future? What directions do you see your music evolving towards in the coming years?

FX: More curated events with emphasis on merging genres together to give you a new way of listening to what you already love.

IDJ: Lastly, what message or feeling do you hope to convey to your listeners through your music, and what do you want them to take away from your performances?

FX: I hope they’re enjoying themself whether on the dance floor or on a long tedious drive. To always feel a good pick me up and release of endorphins when jamming out to a DJ FX mix.
