Should I Use The Sync Button?

There are few topics as controversial and likely to start a Facebook comment war as the age-old question of whether or not a DJ should use the sync button. The sync button can instantaneously align a DJ’s tracks to make their transitions smoother and cleaner. While it doesn’t function perfectly 100% of the time, there’s no denying that it’s a powerful piece of technical wizardry. This tiny, innocuous button stands in the middle of a fierce debate that more accurately centers around the question “Should a ‘real’ DJ use shortcuts to mix?” In this article, we’ll look at both sides of the issue and I’ll give you my thoughts and insights.

You Shouldn’t Use The Sync Button

In corner #1 we have the hardcore DJ traditionalists. They stand firmly in their belief that the sync button is nothing short of the devil incarnate and that it is singlehandedly destroying the very fabric of the DJ industry. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a tiny bit, but there are DJs out there that think this way. Many, however, simply see the sync button as a dangerous shortcut that can deprive new and developing DJs of learning opportunities. Before the sync button existed (and before most of the tech we currently DJ with existed) DJs had to develop the talent of listening to their tracks’ BPMs and aligning them by ear. Even with the increase in popularity of laptop DJing in the past decade, DJs needed to (at the minimum) learn to align their tracks using the beat grid in their software.

If you’re a beginner or someone who has never learned to beat match, I can agree with this group. In my opinion, all DJs should seek to develop a rudimentary ability to understand their songs’ structures and beat match them without the aid of the Sync button. It will make you more appreciative of the music you play. It will help you program your music better. It’s a unique skill that you can be proud of possessing and can happily show off to your friends. If you find yourself in a pinch without a mixer that has a sync button you will be able to continue your show unimpeded. It’s not too complicated and I am fully confident that anyone can learn it with a couple of hours on YouTube.

You Should Use The Sync Button

In corner #2 we have those that are fans of the almighty sync button. It may get pressed occasionally or it may be the most worn button on their mixer. These DJs have embraced the benefits of being a DJ in the 21st century and are utilizing all of the tools available at their disposal. Much like someone forsaking the outdated map found at a gas station for their phone’s GPS, they are saving time and perhaps finding new ways to mix by utilizing the sync button. They don’t fear being called a “fake DJ” by the purists because they let their results speak for themselves.

I can identify with this group as well. If you’re a seasoned DJ who prides himself or herself on your beatmatching ability, I’d encourage you to dabble with the Sync button. It doesn’t need to be used for every transition, but much like a good spice, can be sprinkled in during complicated moments. It can free up your hands to scratch or grab an effect. Maybe a bridesmaid just walked up to your booth as you were about to start a transition and you need to put your attention on assuring her that you’re looking for her Justin Bieber request instead of perfectly dialing in the beat grids. Now, it’s obvious that the key to successfully using the sync button is to use it in moderation. Don’t rely on it for every transition, especially if you’re beatmatching abilities aren’t solid. But, when applied at the right time, it can be a lifesaver for tricky mixes and complicated mashups.

Do you use the sync button? Let me know down in the comments, I’d love to hear your opinion.
